Featured Researcher: Ahmed Messallam

What is your professional background? I graduated from Alexandria University Medical School in Alexandria, Egypt in 2011. After finishing my internship, I worked as a research fellow at Johns Hopkins University in the Division of Gastroenterology, and I was a part-time student at Bloomberg School of Public Health. After this, I joined Emory for my internal medicine residency. I am currently a first-year GI fellow here at Emory.

In which division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Digestive Diseases, and my current mentor is Dr. Field Willingham.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research is mostly focused on advanced endoscopy and therapeutic endoscopic interventions. That includes endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), guided cystgastrostomy for pancreatic pseudocysts, and EUS-FNA of pancreatic masses. In addition to evaluating emerging therapeutic modalities, including peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia and gastric POEM for gastroparesis, these therapeutic endoscopic procedures provide a safe, minimally invasive alternative to complex medical and surgical treatment modalities.

What do you like most about Emory?
The people! Everyone here is very supportive of my clinical and research career. The environment at Emory is set up for success. Clinically, the Emory-affiliated hospitals provide a very diverse patient population and clinical experience.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I’d have to say “Braveheart” is my favorite movie. It has it all the drama, thrills, passion, action, and–above all–good acting! My favorite TV show is “Friends;” it’s always my ‘go-to’ for relaxing in the evening.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my family. I’m still an amateur, but I’m learning photography and photo/video editing. I enjoy playing soccer, and I love cheering on the Egyptian national team (who finally qualified for the World Cup after 28 years of trying)!
