Highlighted Researcher: Ana Carolina Pinheiro Campos

What is your professional background? 
I graduated in 2015 as a pharmacist from Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo, Brazil.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor? 
I work in the Division of Cardiology under the supervision of Dr. Marina Sorrentino and Dr. Kathy Griendling.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important? 
Recently, I have been studying the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of high frequency stimulation – a treatment used for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy – in astrocytes.

What impact/growth has Emory had on your research, and what aspects do you plan to take with you to your future research endeavors? 
Emory is a great place to do research. I had an amazing time learning about tissue culture and molecular biology. The use of these techniques, as well as RT-PCR, has certainly helped further my research career. The mentorship and support of the Emory research community have certainly contributed to my growth as an independent scientist. I will take what I have learned at Emory with me throughout my career.

What have you liked most about Emory? 
The campus is absolutely gorgeous and the people are very welcoming.

What is your favorite movie or TV show? 
My favorite television series is Criminal Minds.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy hanging out with my friends and getting to know the city.
