Recognizing the importance of mentoring in helping faculty reach their career goals and attain career satisfaction, the Department of Medicine’s Mentoring Subcommittee aims to provide resources that will result in more productive and rewarding mentoring relationships. Recently, the committee hosted a Mentoring Training Workshop to provide faculty members an overview of the benefits, challenges, and strategies for effective mentoring relationships.
Facilitated by Russell Kempker, MD, MSc, assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases; Vandana Niyyar, MD, associate professor in the Division of Renal Medicine; Ruxana Sadikot, MD, professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; and Dawn Comeau, PhD, research associate professor at Rollins School of Public Health, the half-day workshop served as an interactive opportunity for faculty members to discuss and share mentoring experiences, as well as learn from best practices.
Participating faculty members described the workshop as very practical and beneficial for establishing their own mentoring relationships. Attendees said they received very concrete, actionable ways to become a better mentor and mentee.
“I was able to talk with other faculty about their experiences and discussed ways to troubleshoot difficulties.” – workshop attendee
