Highlighted Researcher: Marina Sorrentino Hernandes

What is your professional background?
I was born and raised in Brazil. I went to the University of Sao Paulo for graduate school before coming to Emory as a Postdoc.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology, and Dr. Kathy Griendling is my mentor.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Our research focus is on vascular permeability and edema associated with cerebral ischemia, commonly known as stroke. We are specifically interested in understanding how different signaling pathways in astrocytes and microvascular endothelial cells contribute to the disruption of the blood-brain-barrier in cerebral ischemia, which has been associated with higher mortality and longer hospitalization among stroke survivors.

What do you like most about Emory?
The supportive environment and the strong commitment of many of the people I have the pleasure to work with are what I love most about Emory.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I love watching Downton Abbey! The gardens and the architecture of the castles are absolutely stunning! I must confess that Countess Violet’s loyalty and artful behaviors remind me a lot of my grandmother.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, practicing yoga, and exploring the outdoors.
