Faculty Recognitions: Distinguished Service Award

Please join us in congratulating Department of Medicine faculty member Joanna Bonsall, MD, PhD (Hospital Medicine), for receiving the Emory University School of Medicine’s inaugural Distinguished Service Award.

This award recognizes School of Medicine faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding service and citizenship to the Emory community and/or Atlanta and surrounding region.

Joanna Bonsall, MD, PhD

“This year, Joanna Bonsall has taken on the herculean task of establishing a staffing the Hospital Medicine direct care service at Grady Memorial Hospital with optimism and wisdom.”

“Two years ago, clinical demands at Grady far exceeded the capacity of our internal medicine resident teams, leading to residents frequently being pulled from other rotations to care for patients which adversely impacted their educational experiences on important electives. Dr. Bonsall was an integral member of our leadership team that collaborated with Grady administration to plan and implement a hospitalist direct care service to meet the clinical needs.”

“The service officially began in July 2017 with projections that the total daily census of patients managed by the direct care teams would be in the 40-45 range. The new service far exceeded expectations and demand grew rapidly to a peak of 110-120 patients during the recent influenza season. Dr. Bonsall’s leadership through this period of stressful growth has been a shining example of service leadership. She leads on the frontline, juggling clinical care, coordination of resources, and collaboration with multiple stakeholders in a complex hospital system.”

“In addition to her work at Grady Memorial Hospital, Dr. Bonsall serves as the Associate Division Director for Faculty Development, the Course Director for the School of Medicine MD/PhD Re-entry Course, the MD/PhD Clinical Co-director, and the Society Advisor for the Semmelweiss Society.”
