The Department of Medicine announces new diversity, equity, and inclusion vice chair and associate vice chair

Kimberly Manning, MD and Jada Bussey-Jones, MD

The Emory University Department of Medicine is excited to announce that it has chosen Jada Bussey-Jones, MD as the new Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In addition, Kimberly Manning, MD will serve as the department’s Associate Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Together, Bussey-Jones and Manning will provide vision and leadership in promoting a departmental culture that values and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion. Bussey-Jones will also chair the DOM Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council.

Bussey-Jones, professor of medicine, serves as the chief of General Medicine and Geriatrics for Emory at Grady Memorial Hospital and the director of education for Emory’s Urban Health Initiative. She works collaboratively to improve access and quality of care for Grady’s patient population. Her academic work centers around developing interventions to mitigate health disparities and to address social determinants of health. Last year, Bussey-Jones developed and led the inaugural Diverse Recruitment is Valuable (DRIVE) Underrepresented Minority (URM) Faculty Development program. This pilot program was supported by the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics and promoted career development through didactics, peer mentoring, and discussions about the experience of navigating academic medicine as an underrepresented minority faculty member. She also chaired the 2017 Society of General Medicine (SGIM) Ad Hoc Workgroup on harassment and discrimination which helped to develop national organizational policies around harassment and discrimination.

Manning is an associate professor in the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics. In addition to serving as a clinician educator on the inpatient and outpatient settings at Grady Memorial Hospital, Manning serves as residency program director for the Transitional Year Residency Program. She also has the distinction of being one of 32 School of Medicine faculty appointed as small group advisors for the undergraduate medical curriculum. Manning is known for her innovative approach to medical education. She is the lead for the Distinction in Teaching and Leadership for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and is also immediate past chair of the DOM Academy of Medical Educators. Manning also recently chaired the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force in the School of Medicine.

Please join us in congratulating these two faculty members on their new positions. We look forward to seeing how their dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion will shape the department and its culture.
