The Department of Medicine seeks Outpatient Experience Director

The Department of Medicine is currently soliciting applications to fill the position of Director of Outpatient Experience (OPEX) for the preclinical medical students at Emory’s School of Medicine. This position is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual with an interest in undergraduate medical student education.

The OPEX director will administer the OPEX program which places medical students in outpatient clinical experiences every other week beginning in the first year of medical school and continuing for the duration of the MD Foundations Curriculum (until November of their second year). Approximately 138 students participate in this learning experience which helps solidify history and physical examination skills learned during the Essentials of Patient Care (EPC) curriculum, while offering them the opportunity to learn from role model clinicians. Partial FTE (0.20) of salary support will be provided and administrative support is in place. The director will also be encouraged to suggest improvements in the OPEX program.

The OPEX Director’s responsibilities include:

• Review and update curriculum
• Coordinate the OPEX curriculum within the EPC course, working with the EPC directors, Lisa Bernstein, MD and Martha Ward, MD
• Recruit primary care physicians from across Emory and Atlanta to serve as preceptors
• Orient medical students to OPEX
• Serve as a liaison between students and preceptors
• Troubleshoot issues as they arise
• Coordinate and review evaluations of students, preceptors, and the course
• Prepare reports for the curriculum committee and the dean’s office annually and as requested
• Attend a curriculum committee meeting once a year

This opportunity is open to members of the Department of Medicine who have significant outpatient experience with an emphasis on primary care.
