Educator Spotlight: Yoo Mee Shin

1.) Tell us about yourself
One of my friends from high school would always refer to me as the loudest Korean person she has ever met. I’m outgoing and a social butterfly. I love interacting with people, which is why I love being a physician. I like listening to my patients stories and learning about their backgrounds. The lives our patients have lived are amazing!

2.) Why did you go into medicine?
I went into medicine because, like all doctors, I wanted to help people. I stayed in academic hospital medicine because I love the variety it provides. Every day is different.

3.) What do you enjoy most about teaching?
In teaching others, I learn so much. I love rotating on the teaching service because of this. The residents, students, and pharmacists are always teaching me something new and, in turn, I’m teaching them something as well. It keeps my medical knowledge fresh and it’s fun to watch the residents and students grow during my block with them.

4.) Dogs or Cats?
I prefer dogs although my husband says I have a cat like personality.

5.) What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have no spare time! (I’m a mom…)
