The Department of Medicine is seeking applications for the Chief of Medicine position at Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM). The Martha West Looney Chief of Medicine Service at Emory University Hospital Midtown provides academic leadership and medical oversight and direction of the medicine services at EUHM. The Chief of Medicine reports jointly to the Chair of the Department of Medicine (DOM), to the EUHM Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of EUHM. The Chief of Medicine works closely with DOM division directors and vice chairs. The Chief of Medicine also works closely with the Emory University School of Medicine and Emory Healthcare (EHC) administrative leaders of medicine; The Emory Clinic; the Heart and Vascular Center; primary care; operations and strategy development; as well as with clinical and fiscal oversight of the Department of Medicine clinical, research, and educational services at EUHM.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform all duties of the Chief of Service as delineated in the Emory Hospitals Bylaws including being accountable for clinical and professional activities of the medicine service at EUHM.
- Oversees the educational and research programs of the DOM at EUHM, including providing mentorship for EUHM-based DOM faculty.
- Makes recommendations regarding the medicine service and the medical policies and procedures of EUHM.
- Performs hospital credentialing functions in partnership with medical subspecialty chiefs, including review of initial applications and reappointments and participation in the development of criteria for clinical privileges.
- Evaluates (along with designees) members of the medical staff appointed to the medical service to confirm competence consistent with the Emory Focused Professional Practice Evaluation Policy and reviews/confirms ongoing professional performance consistent with the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation Policy.
- Represents or designates a representative as appropriate the DOM and medicine service on hospital and clinic committees as necessary.
- Partners with the CMO, CQO, Peer Review Committee and other quality leads to investigate clinical performance issues and determine need for corrective action. Implements actions taken by the EUHM Medical Executive Committee.
- Works cooperatively with nursing, administration, and support services in matters affecting patient care, including staffing levels, personnel, supplies, special regulations, standing orders, and medical protocols.
- Assists in the preparation of reports pertaining to the DOM and Medicine service as required.
- Partners with program directors to ensure that the educational programs for students, house staff and fellows meet the highest standards of quality and satisfy appropriate educational requirements.
- Works with division directors and service chiefs to enhance clinical quality and productivity of DOM faculty based at EUHM, as well as opportunities for research.
- Partners with system and entity leads to identify quality measures, monitor quality of care, and implement performance improvement activities.
- Participates in risk management programs.
- Implements strategic goals of the department.
- Makes recommendations regarding space, equipment, and other needed resources.
- Assists sections within medicine with recruitment/retention efforts.
- Conducts meetings with DOM Academic and Clinical Administrator, divisional administrative leaders and section service chiefs.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
