Educator Spotlight: Viniya Patidar

1.) Tell us about yourself
I am originally from India, but consider myself an Atlanta native since I’ve done most of my schooling here. I am a Georgia Tech and Medical College of Georgia alum and did my training in internal medicine at Emory. I joined the faculty in the Division of Hospital Medicine in 2016, practicing at Emory Midtown Hospital. I have really enjoyed my time thus far, especially due to the camaraderie throughout Emory, working with students and residents, and being surrounded by experts in all fields of medicine!

2.) Why did you go into medicine?
I would say that I went into medicine because I want to help people in need. Growing up, I would observe the faith people had in their doctors and so I wanted to shoulder that responsibility and do well by them.

3.) What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Teaching has allowed me the opportunity for continued learning and personal growth. I truly enjoy an informal setting where we can discuss not only the science behind how we treat our patients, but also the psychosocial aspect of medicine and how it affects both the patient and their care providers.

4.) Dogs or Cats?
Dogs!

5.) What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to experience and learn new things – whether that is reading a book, listening to a podcast, or trying out a new recipe. But my most favorite way of experiencing something new is to travel! My husband and I have been lucky to travel to places both near and far. And though we may have to take a break from traveling, it is only because I have a new learning experience at hand – being a mother. We are expecting our first child in a few short weeks!
