Maura George, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics, received the Evangeline T. Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Award at Emory University School of Medicine‘s 2019 commencement ceremony on May 13. The award, which was established in 1993 by the Emory Medical Alumni Association, is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the School of Medicine and Emory University.
The Papageorge Award recognizes excellence in the teaching of medical education and honors the legacy of Dr. Evangeline Papageorge 29G 37M, beloved teacher and administrator who served Emory for many decades. The award and honorarium are given each year to a medical faculty member whose intellectual luminosity has generated the greatest excitement about learning among students and colleagues.
“I was stunned when they announced my name,” says George. “The past recipients of this award are all mentors and role models to me, so I am honored that students thought I belonged in their company. It’s been so rewarding to teach our medical students. They make my job enjoyable each day.”
In the nomination letters submitted by Emory medical students, George was described as “an incredible inspiration,” “medical superwoman,” someone who “puts her heart into her teaching,” and a “skilled, knowledgeable faculty member who also stays extremely humble.”
Please join us in congratulating George on this well-deserved recognition!
