Highlighted Researcher: Adegboyega Olayode

What is your professional background?
I received my medical degree from the University of Lagos, completed internal medicine residency training at Creighton University and a non-degree clinical research program at Harvard University. Following residency training, I joined the faculty here at Emory University School of Medicine. My clinical practice is at Emory University Hospital Midtown.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine. My mentors are Dr. Daniel Hunt and Dr. John Roback.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Broadly, my research focus is on health services research and quality improvement. Currently, I am working on a multi-disciplinary quality improvement project aimed at improving the treatment rate of Helicobacter pylori among hospitalized patients at Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM). H. pylori is a World Health Organization class I carcinogen strongly associated with the development of gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma; it is linked to other nonmalignant gastrointestinal diseases including peptic ulcer disease and non-ulcer dyspepsia, and may also have a role in unexplained iron deficiency anemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Although effective treatment is available, only about half of the hospitalized patients at EUHM diagnosed with H. pylori following an esophagogastroduodenoscopy & gastric biopsy will end up receiving treatment. This is largely due to the fact that the majority of positive pathology results become available after discharge and most of these patients don’t attend outpatient follow-up appointments. We plan on improving this mainly via the use of biopsy urease testing following EGD & gastric biopsy. This will provide a result within one hour, thereby enabling initiation of treatment prior to discharge.

What do you like most about Emory?
Emory has a very strong culture of collaboration and diversity which fosters excellence in research, teaching, and clinical service.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with family/friends, reading, watching movies/TV shows/Broadway shows, listening to music, and exploring restaurants.
