Carlos del Rio named Executive Associate Dean for Emory School of Medicine at Grady Health System

Carlos del Rio, MD has been named  Executive Associate Dean for Emory School of Medicine at Grady Health System. In this role, effective Nov. 1, 2019, he will provide executive oversight and strategic vision for Emory’s clinical, research, and teaching missions at Grady. He also will serve as Board Chair of the Emory Medical Care Foundation. Dr. del Rio will play a critically important leadership role in continuing to strengthen our relationship with Grady, a key component of the School of Medicine’s strategic framework.

Dr. del Rio moves into this role having successfully served as the Interim Executive Associate Dean since January 2017. He is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, co-Director of the Emory Center for AIDS Research, and co-PI of the Emory-CDC HIV Clinical Trials Unit. For the past decade Dr. del Rio was the Richard N. Hubert Professor and Chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health.

Carlos del Rio has spent his career working to prevent, treat and improve patient outcomes for infectious diseases locally and globally, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS. He did his medicine residency (1983-86) and infectious diseases fellowship (1986-88) at Emory and served as Chief Resident at Crawford W. Long Hospital (now Emory University Hospital Midtown). He was Chief of the Emory Medical Service at Grady Memorial Hospital from 2001 through 2009, and he has built an excellent research program that has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1998. His research interests include the early diagnosis of HIV, access to care and compliance with antiretrovirals with a particular focus on vulnerable populations. For these accomplishments and others, he has received multiple awards, including election to the National Academy of Medicine (previously the Institute of Medicine) and the Thomas Jefferson Award from Emory University.
