Highlighted Researcher: Tanvi Dhere, MD

What is your professional background?
I went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed my residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Returning to the south, I finished my GI fellowship at Emory. Currently, I serve as the director of inflammatory bowel diseases at the Emory Clinic.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am in the Division of Digestive Diseases. I have been fortunate to have several mentors to help me along my journey including Dr. Subra Kugathasan

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
I have several research interests including studying irritable bowel disease (IBD) in the African-American population, a population that is underrepresented in IBD clinical studies. I also have several clinical trials looking at novel therapies for treatment of IBD including manipulating the gut microbiome to treat ulcerative colitis and utilization of stem cells for treatment of perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease. Such studies are warranted, as current therapeutic strategies for IBD are limited. I also collaborate with infectious disease to study new therapies for treatment of recurrent Clostridiodes difficile infection. from Emory Children’s.

What do you like most about Emory?
My favorite part of Emory is the collegiality among providers. IBD requires a multidisciplinary approach, and I am fortunate to have wonderful colleagues within my division as well as in surgery, radiology, and pathology to help me provide the best care for my patients.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite TV show is Working Moms on Netflix.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
During my spare time, I like to make the most of the precious time I have with my two girls, Riya, age 7, and Raina, age 3, and my husband.

What is a fun fact about you?
I’ve been on CNN Accent Health.
