Highlighted Researcher: Ibironke Apata, MD

What is your professional background?
I am an adult nephrologist and medical epidemiologist. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Emory University, received my medical education at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and conducted my Internal Medicine residency training at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell. I returned to Emory University School of Medicine for my Nephrology fellowship, and went on to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a 2-year Epidemic Intelligence Service fellowship.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Renal Medicine. I have several mentors who have contributed tremendously to my professional growth including Dr. Igho Ofotokun (Infectious Diseases), Dr. Vandana Niyyar (Nephrology), Dr. Priti Patel (CDC), Dr. Jason Cobb (Nephrology), and Dr. James Bailey (Nephrology).

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research and scholarly work focus on infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship in the hemodialysis setting. I have explored strategies to decrease bloodstream infections among patients on hemodialysis and prevent transmission of infections in the dialysis setting such as improving central venous catheter care and increasing uptake of infection control measures and vaccinations in this patient population. This work is important because infections account for the second leading cause of death among patients on chronic hemodialysis, and causes significant morbidity and healthcare costs in this population.

What do you like most about Emory?
Emory’s global reputation for clinical and academic excellence opens doors. Its diversity of patients, students, trainees, and faculty allow for opportunities for meaningful clinical service and great collaboration and scholarly work.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I have several favorites but one that comes to mind is the TV series, “Big Little Lies” because it depicts strong women coming together to support each other.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy traveling and exploring cities.

What is a fun fact about you?
I have visited or lived in 21 countries.
