Georgia Tech donates 150 face shields to Emory internal medicine residency program

The Georgia Tech Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering recently donated 150 face shields for Emory’s internal medicine residents to wear while they are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgia Tech researchers and engineers have been volunteering their time, skills, and resources to provide this necessity for residents during a time when PPE supplies are very limited. The face shields provide comfortable protection and prolong the life of the masks residents typically wear.

In collaboration with the Georgia Tech team, Dart Container Corporation donated PET sheets that are a critical component of the face shield.

Chuck Redmon, a regional sales manager at Dart Container said, “We are so thrilled to be able to help protect Emory’s healthcare heroes! It was a privilege to donate the shield component so Georgia Tech could combine them with their face frames and send them your way.”

Karen Law, MD, program director of the Department of Medicine’s J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program, played a key role in coordinating this initiative and is proud of the community’s support during this challenging time.

“This is such an exciting example of the direct impact of Emory’s partnership with Georgia Tech in Biomedical Engineering,” Law said. “The Tech engineering team worked closely with Emory clinical staff on prototypes, and went from prototype to production, distribution, and clinical use in days. We are so thankful for their expertise and collaboration!”

The Department of Medicine would like to sincerely thank the Georgia Tech team and Dart Container Corporation for their hard work and incredible contribution. This community collaboration makes it possible for our residents to serve Emory patients while also prioritizing safety.
