National Hispanic Heritage Month began September 15, the day the nations of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica) celebrated their independence. This holiday was initially designated as a week of celebration by presidential proclamation in 1968, and twenty years later expanded to a full month honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
