Why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine?
I was initially interested in a basic science research career with academic strengths in biomedical sciences. In college, through various leadership positions in student organizations, I developed what I label ‘people’ skills. I eventually determined that a career in medicine would be most fulfilling.

What led you to take an active role in diversity and equity, particularly as it relates to LGBTQ patients and professionals?
As I embraced my identity as a gay man, I recognized my power as a physician advocate for improving health equity and access for the larger LGBTQ community.

Can you share more about your role in advancing LGBTQ health at our institution and nationally?
Much of my early advocacy and policy work came through involvement through GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality. I served on the board for more than 12 years, including as president of the organization for two of those years. At Emory, I have worked to improve educational efforts around human sexuality and sexual history-taking. Relevant to the greater Atlanta community, I have served as medical director (now co-medical director) of the Atlanta Pride Festival for many years.

Are there any initiatives you are most passionate about or proud of?
I am most proud of bringing the annual GLMA meeting to Atlanta in 2011, sharing the treasures of our city with an international audience. More recently, I was the lead editor for The GLMA Handbook on LGBT Health. It was recently recognized by Foreword Reviews for excellence in LGBTQ+ publishing in 2019.

What lasting impact do you hope to have?
I hope to make Emory, the SOM, and the DOM a fully inclusive and welcoming place for LGBTQ faculty, staff, and learners. Mentoring and advising LGBTQ-identified trainees is becoming an increasingly rewarding and important role for me, too.
