2020-2021 Chief Resident Spotlight: Eli Wilber

How did Emory’s residency program prepare you for your future career?
Being a chief resident gave me the opportunity to “peer behind the curtain” of academic medicine and get first-hand experience as a junior faculty member. I grew so much as an educator and a leader, and I have a lot more confidence about my ability to transition to a faculty role…once I finish training in another three years!!

What’s the biggest takeaway from your year as a chief resident?
The maxim “don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to” applies just as well to organizational management as it does to diagnostic testing.

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to incoming Emory residents?
Time is a valid diagnostic test. Sometimes you just have to wait and watch to see what happens.

What will you miss the most about Emory’s residency program?
My friends who have left Emory to train/work at other institutions.

What do you enjoy most about living in Atlanta?
The food!

What are your career plans for after residency?
Very excited to be continuing my training as a fellow in infectious diseases here at Emory.
