Melissa Schuermann named Vice President for Internal Medicine/Executive Administrator for Clinical Affairs & Administration for the Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is excited to announce that Melissa Schuermann has been named Vice President for Internal Medicine/Executive Administrator for Clinical Affairs & Administration, effective April 1.

As VP for Internal Medicine/Executive Administrator for Clinical Affairs & Administration, Schuermann will be responsible for the department’s strategic, financial, and operational oversight for the internal medicine specialties within Emory Healthcare, the Emory Clinic, and the Emory Clinic Physician Group Practices. She will also partner with John Sauer, the department’s Executive Administrator for Academic Affairs and Administration, to develop departmental long- and short-term strategic goals and objectives. Her role will also include working closely with the department chair, academic executive administrator, and division leadership to plan and develop comprehensive budgets, oversee physician compensation and deployment, prepare and submit capital requests, and lead overall operations for the internal medicine specialties.

Schuermann has a long history at Emory. She comes to the Department of Medicine from the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics where she has served as the department’s senior administrator/clinical administrator since January 2017. She has also supported the Department of Ophthalmology as interim senior administrator since August 2021. Her other prior roles at Emory include administrator for clinic operations for the Divisions of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery within Emory’s Department of Surgery, as well as multiple other positions within the Department of Surgery.

She received her master of science in health administration and master of business administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her bachelor of science in business administration in finance and accounting from Mercer University.

Schuermann will replace Joey Dee who has been named Vice President of Operations with the Emory Physician Group Practice. Dee held the Executive Administrator for Clinical Affairs role since 2018 and has dedicated 16 years of service to the School of Medicine and the Emory Clinic. We are incredibly thankful for his many years of leadership in the Department of Medicine.

Please join us in congratulating Schuermann on her new role in the Department of Medicine. We look forward to seeing how her leadership will continue to advance the department’s clinical operations and strategic vision.
