Researcher Spotlight: Jane Yoon Scott

What is your professional background?
Most of my higher education was completed in my home state of Georgia, starting with Georgia Tech for undergrad, then the Medical College of Georgia for medical school. I moved to Philly after earning my MD, where I completed internal medicine residency training and a chief resident year at Temple University Hospital. I came back to Atlanta for infectious diseases fellowship at Emory and joined the Department of Medicine faculty last July.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Infectious Diseases, and my primary mentor is Dr. David Holland, who is chief clinical officer of the Fulton County Board of Health and an all-around champion for local public health.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research interests have been broadly focused on the intersection of infectious diseases and local public health, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my research focused on exploring COVID-19 prevalence and transmission dynamics in congregate settings and COVID-19 vaccine equity initiatives. More recently, I have been able to shift gears to non-COVID research, including a study investigating HIV prevalence among persons experiencing homelessness and an implementation science project examining how to increase access to HIV services for underserved communities in Metro Atlanta. I also have been looking to characterize the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in refugees identified on routine domestic health assessments. These areas of research are important in laying the groundwork for implementing sustainable strategies that will improve the health of our communities, with particular attention to those who do not enjoy equal access to health care.

What do you like most about Emory?
Emory’s collaborative energy and collegial environment are hands down its best boasting points.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My two (I couldn’t choose just one!) favorite TV shows are “Stranger Things” and “Cobra Kai,” both of which are fantastic and filmed in and around Atlanta.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy anything that involves quality time with my husband, family, and friends. I appreciate a cozy coffee shop, weekend hikes, playing guitar, strolling through cities, sampling restaurants, and exploring film locations of my favorite TV shows (see above).

What is a fun fact about you?
Since getting married in 2020, I have completed several DIY home projects that have resulted in a lot of saved money, satisfaction, and a happy husband.
