The Department of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Development and Mentoring Subcommittee recently held their first in-person event since 2020! Faculty from across the department gathered at the School of Medicine for a Mentoring Training Workshop which provided an overview of the benefits, challenges, and strategies for effective mentoring relationships — a critical area for reaching career goals and satisfaction in academic medicine.
The exciting half-day workshop was facilitated by DOM Mentoring Subcommittee members Meena Prasad, MD, chair of the Mentoring Subcommittee and assistant professor; Siva Bhavani, MD, assistant professor; Jeffrey Collins, MD, assistant professor; Sushma Cribbs, MD, MSc, associate professor; Modele Ogunniyi, MD, MPH, associate professor; and Sonya Haw, MD, assistant professor. It served as an interactive opportunity for faculty members to discuss and share mentoring experiences, as well as learn best practices. Programming included didactic teaching and interactive case studies to teach key concepts that can be applied to all mentor/mentee relationships. Session topics included an introduction to mentoring, aligning expectations, professional development, and fostering DEI.
Participating faculty members were thrilled to engage with one another in-person and described the event as “exceptional” and “a great way to kick off our DOM Mentoring efforts this year!”
