Researcher Spotlight: Felipe Paredes Diaz

What is your professional background?
I started my professional career working in cell metabolism and cancer; during this stage, I acquired knowledge in quality control of proteins linked to mitochondrial metabolism. This knowledge transferred to the study of cardiovascular diseases, specifically how the regulation of mitochondrial and energy metabolism regulates the cellular plasticity of smooth muscle cells in the context of cardiovascular disease.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine; my mentor is Dr. Alejandra San Martin.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important? 
My work focuses on discovering the molecular mechanisms of how cell metabolism affects the response of cells linked to vascular function. The objective is to find new therapeutic targets or new pharmacological approaches for the treatment of vascular diseases.

What do you like most about Emory? 
In addition to the campus, which is very beautiful, what I like the most is that the work environment is spectacular, mainly because the university is very diverse.

What is your favorite movie or TV show? 
I am a film buff; my favorite movie is Alien: The Eighth Passenger (1979). My favorite series is Breaking Bad (2008)

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Watch movies with my family; we are all big movie fans.

What is a fun fact about you? 
In addition to being passionate about science, I like to cook; I love experimenting in the kitchen.
