We are pleased to announce that Colin Washington, MD, has been named an Associate Program Director for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency program. Dr. Washington completed his undergraduate studies, MD, and MPH degree with a focus in Behavioral Science and Health Education at Emory. Following internal medicine residency training and a chief medical resident year at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Washington was recruited back to Atlanta and joined Emory University School of Medicine faculty as an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital
in 2021.
Dr. Washington spends his clinical time on the inpatient teaching services at Grady, working closely with housestaff and students on their inpatient medicine rotations. His areas of interest are delivering compassionate care for marginalized communities and fostering cultural competence in learners. He currently serves as a unit medical director and M3 IM clerkship site director at Grady Memorial Hospital. In 2022, he was awarded Best Inpatient Attending in the Division of General Medicine by the housestaff in recognition of his outstanding teaching. Nationally, Dr. Washington is an associate editor with the NEJM Group Healer App, a medical education app that teaches students and house staff clinical reasoning via virtual patient encounters guided by evidence and the experience of expert clinicians.
Dr. Washington will join the residency program’s leadership team, effective Sept 1, 2023, along with six other Associate Program Directors and led by Residency Program Director Reena Hemrajani, MD. Together, the residency leadership team helps guide the residency program’s administrative, clinical, and educational oversight.
