Katie Gielissen, MD, MHS-MedEd, named Program Director for the new Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Training Program

We are pleased to announce that Katie Gielissen, MD, MHS-MedEd, has joined Emory University as an Assistant Professor and has been named Program Director for the new Internal Medicine/Pediatrics training program within the Department of Medicine. She joins Emory from Yale University where she served as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Gielissen earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago – Pritzker School of Medicine before completing her Internal Medicine / Pediatrics training at Yale New Haven Hospital. She completed the General Internal Medicine Medical Education Fellowship and an MHS through the Medical Education Pathway (MHS-Med Ed) in 2018. She previously served as the Ambulatory Associate Program Director for the Yale Traditional Internal Medicine Program, Associate Clerkship Director for the Internal Medicine Clerkship, and directed the Yale Pediatrics Clinician-Educator Track (PCET) and Yale Internal Medicine Clinician-Educator Distinction (CED). In 2019, she joined as a co-editor of the Yale Office-Based Medicine (YOBM), an ambulatory curriculum used at over 300 programs across the country.

This development of this new combined specialty program at Emory, where trainees will complete an integrated Internal Medicine and a Pediatric residency, will fall under Dr. Gielissen’s leadership and oversight. Once the program has been approved by ACGME, it will be the only Med/Peds program in Georgia and one of approximately 80 Med/Peds programs across the country. Trainees who choose this track usually go on to specialize in something unique which combines the skillsets of both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. Under her leadership, Dr. Gielissen plans to build a welcoming and innovative culture to this unique program. She is excited to offer students the opportunity to pursue Med/Peds training, where they can explore their early careers in the rich academic setting Emory provides. Dr. Gielissen hopes to receive ACCGME approval so they can begin interviewing interested candidates in the next 1-2 years.

More details about this exciting new program within the Department of Medicine will be released soon.
