The Emory Department of Medicine’s 16th Annual Research Day was held on Thursday, November 2, 2023. The event, held in person at the Emory Student Center, welcomed more than 300 researchers, faculty, staff, and trainees to celebrate the groundbreaking research across all ten of the department’s divisions.

The Department of Medicine received a record number of abstracts this year, showcasing progress, lessons, and breakthroughs from research across basic, translational, and clinical domains. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to learn from more than 150 poster presentations and twelve oral presentations, as well as a talk from the DOM’s new Vice Chair for Research, Dr. Vibha Lama, MD; featured research talks from three DOM faculty investigators; and a keynote address from Emory’s new Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Dr. Ravi I. Thadhani, MD, MPH. His keynote, entitled “Bench, Bedside, and Luck: Our journey to change the course of preeclampsia,” explored the impact of his work on maternal and infant mortality and imagined a future where preventable labor crises are radically reduced.

In addition, this year, Kathy Griendling, PhD, Executive Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development for the School of Medicine, presented the inaugural Lifetime Achievement in Research lecture as the fourth and final featured researcher of the day. Her presentation was entitled “Poldip2 and vascular function.” Dr. Griendling previously served as Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine and held the department’s first Research Day in 2008.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from the following DOM researchers, who were Featured Researchers throughout the day.

  • Featured Research I: Sara Turbow, MD, MPH, associate professor (General Internal Medicine), “The past, present, and future of health information exchanges”
  • Featured Research II: Ahmed Babiker, MD, assistant professor (Infectious Diseases), “Our gastrointestinal guardian angels: The role of the gastrointestinal microbiome in MDRO colonization resistance”
  • Featured Research III: Siva Bhavani, MD, assistant professor (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine), “Racial disparities in the accuracy of infrared medical devices”
  • Featured Research IV: Lifetime Achievement in Research Kathy Griendling, PhD, executive associate dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, “Poldip2 and vascular function”

We appreciate the Research and Faculty Development team’s hard work planning this wonderful event. Thank you once more to all our speakers, presenters, and attendees for your time and input, and congratulations again to the recipients of the 2023 awards!
