The 21st Annual IM Resident Research Day celebrates another year of resident accomplishments

Group photo of keynote speaker Siva Bhavani, MD, and othersFor over two decades, the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has hosted this annual event to showcase our residents’ research achievements and celebrate the collaboration between residents and dedicated faculty.

The Resident Research Day Grand Rounds started with the keynote speech, “From Antiquity to Big Data: A Vital History of Body Temperature,” from Siva Bhavani, MD, assistant professor of medicine for the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.

The event also included resident oral and poster presentations. Please see below for this year’s Resident Research Day winners. Congratulations to all of our presenters on their extraordinary work!

There were 116 poster entries for Resident Research Day, including 60 original research projects and 56 clinical vignettes.

The following winners were selected by faculty judge reviewers:

Original Research Poster Winners

  • 1st place: Mildred Nelson, Reducing the Cost: “A Comparison of Once-daily versus Multiple-daily Intravenous Antibiotic Administration on Healthcare Costs and Waste”
  • 2nd place: Tyler Kristoff, “Statin drugs augment tumor response to anti-PD-1 immune check point blockade in head and neck cancer patients”
  • 3rd place: Aaron Issac, “Developing User-Friendly Ambulatory Referrals: A Pilot Study in Gastroenterology Referral Services at a Large Academic Safety Net Hospital System”

Honorable Mention, Original Research

  • Honorable mention: Anita Kaw, “Augmenting Mitochondrial Respiration in Immature Smooth Muscle Cells with an ACTA2 Pathogenic Variant Mitigates Moyamoya-like Cerebrovascular Disease”
