Spotlight: Emory Division of Hospital Medicine Teaching Competition

Emory Division of Hospital Medicine will host its hotly contested EDHM Teaching Competition on Tuesday, March 11. EDHM welcomes all of our Department of Medicine colleagues to join for this fun and educational rivalry match.

Each year, a junior faculty member from each of the Division’s clinical sites competes with their peers to see who can give the sharpest, most informative eight-minute teaching talk to a virtual audience made up of faculty, staff, trainees, and a host of leaders and viewers from outside the Division. The winner of this friendly competition, hosted this year by Michael Jones, MD, and Eric Baken, MD, gets to bring back the EDHM Teaching Competition Trophy for display at their facility for the next year.

Last year, as Emory University Hospital’s competitor, host Dr. Jones snatched the coveted trophy from its previous home, the Atlanta VA Medical Center (where it had been won by Brandon Muckley, MD, in 2023), with his talk “To Stress or Not to Stress.” This year, the competitors are Caroline Coleman, MD, (Atlanta VA Medical Center); Jeremy Davis, MD, (Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital); Kajal Joshi, MD, (Emory Johns Creek Hospital); Dr. Zachary Owens (Emory University Hospital Midtown); Eric Peeler, MD, (Emory University Hospital); and Youssef Saklawi, MD, (Grady Memorial Hospital).

EDHM has a number of efforts to showcase our faculty’s educational talents. Drs. Coleman and Saklawi will be delivering iterations of the talks they will also give as part of the 2025 Med-TED Teaching Competition at the Society of Hospital Medicine Converge meeting in April. On May 8, Monee Amin, MD, and Meredith Trubitt, MD, will host the division’s second Annual Teaching Invitational, where competitors from institutions across the country including Johns Hopkins University, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Vanderbilt, and Duke will battle it out for med-ed victory.
