The Department of Medicine is excited to announce the development of a new Assistant Vice Chair of Education for Clinical Reasoning position in the education leadership team devoted to teaching and assessing clinical reasoning at all levels across the Department of Medicine. We are also pleased to announce that Varun Phadke, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been chosen for this new role.
Clinical reasoning is a core skill and crucial competency that is essential to the practice of medicine for all levels of learners, including medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Phadke will be tasked with spearheading a clinical reasoning program for each. His role will include developing a curriculum and assessment program for the internal medicine residency program, extending the current curriculum for medical students, establishing faculty development in teaching, and assessing clinical reasoning and related scholarship opportunities for faculty.
Phadke joined the Emory faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2017 and serves as the Associate Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. He has also been a core faculty member for the internal medicine residency program. At the School of Medicine, he is the Director of the Microbiology Thread for the Foundations Curriculum and the Associate Clerkship Director of the Junior Internal Medicine Clerkship. He completed a fellowship in diagnostic excellence through the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine in 2021 and serves as a contributing editor for the HumanDx project. Phadke also serves as the Vice Chair of the Teaching and Learning Resources Work Group of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Medical Education Community of Practice and Chair of the Education Workgroup of the American Society of Transplantation (AST) ID Community of Practice.
Phadke received his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and his doctor of medicine degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center and his fellowship training in infectious diseases at Emory.
