Katalin Susztak, MD, PhD (University of Pennsylvania) will present a talk entitled “APOL1-associated kidney disease” at the 2016 Juha P. Kokko Lecture in Nephrology.
The Juha P. Kokko Lecture in Nephrology is presented annually to honor Dr. Juha P. Kokko, who served as chair of the department at Emory University from 1986 to 1999 and developed a nationally prominent research base to complement the excellent clinical care for which the Department of Medicine is recognized. The lectures are given annually by a rising star in nephrology research.

About Dr. Sustak
Dr. Suszak earned an MD and a PhD at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. In addition, she earned an MS at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
Her research is aimed at understanding molecular pathways that govern chronic kidney disease development in two general areas of interest: hypothesis-generating (high trough-put, translational) and mechanistic studies. Learn more
About Juha P. Kokko, MD, PhD
Juha P. Kokko, MD, PhD
Juha P. Kokko, MD, PhD–nationally and internationally recognized for his studies on kidney function–achieved tremendous success throughout his career. He has authored more than 100 original works in journals which meet the highest peer-review standards. Along with Richard Tannen, MD, Kokko is co-editor of Fluids and Electrolytes, the definitive book in the field. He is one of five consulting editors on the 20th edition of Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine, one of the most widely used references by physicians. Kokko’s longstanding interest in and commitment to medical research is evidenced by his success in training more than 100 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom became directors of divisions of nephrology at other prestigious universities. As past chair of the Department of Medicine, Emory University’s largest department, Kokko developed a nationally prominent research base to complement the department’s excellent clinical care. He also spearheaded efforts to establish Grady Memorial Hospital’s general clinical research center.
