Highlighted Researcher: Daniel Kikuchi

What is your professional background?
I graduated from Emory in 2017 with a BS in Biology. I have now been accepted into Emory School of Medicine, so I will begin my medical school journey in the fall of this year. As an undergraduate, I worked closely with Dr. Lauren Huff, a postdoc in the Griendling Lab, studying the regulation of a RhoGEF in vascular smooth muscle cells.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology, and Drs. Kathy Griendling and Marina Sorrentino Hernandes are my mentors.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
This past year, I have been working on a new project focused on blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. In the clinical setting, BBB permeability following ischemic stroke is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality. We are interested in studying the molecular mechanism of this permeability using in vitro assays and in vivo models.

What impact/growth has Emory had on your research, and what aspects do you plan to take with you to your future research endeavors?
During my time at Emory, I have learned to perform a variety of biochemical assays. Perhaps, more importantly, however, my time in the lab has taught me to think critically about science. Additionally, the supportive mentors that I developed during my time at Emory have been an invaluable source of guidance, and I will take these connections with me moving forward.

What have you liked most about Emory?
The community at Emory is very supportive. People are generally very friendly and open to working with others. I have really enjoyed and benefited from this collaborative atmosphere. It is also difficult to beat Atlanta’s temperate weather.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite movie is Inception.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy running. When it is nice outside, I like to go to Lullwater Park.
