Three faculty members selected to receive the 2019 FAME Grant

The Department of Medicine has selected faculty members Anand Jain, MD, Adegboyega Olayode, MD, and Annie Massart, MD as the 2019 Fostering the Academic Mission in the Emory Department of Medicine (FAME) Grant recipients. For more than a decade, the FAME Grant enables Department of Medicine clinician faculty to dedicate up to 20 percent of their professional time to scholarly activities, including research, education, quality improvement projects, and mentoring.

Please join us in congratulating the below three awardees:

Anand Jain, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases

Through his FAME Grant project “Diagnosis of esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction in proton-pump inhibitor non-responders using the functional lumen imaging probe,” Jain expects to demonstrate that an evaluation of esophageal motility with the functional lumen imaging probe in patients with esophageal symptoms can improve treatment outcomes.

“This grant will generate powerful data with regards to treatment outcomes and physiology in esophageal diseases,” Jain says. “I am particularly excited to show that precise up-front disease phenotyping in patients with esophageal symptoms can improve the quality of care for them.”

Adegboyega Olayode, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine

Olayode’s FAME Grant project “Diagnosis and treatment of helicobacter pylori among hospitalized patients: Quality improvement measure to avoid missed test results and ensure appropriate treatment” aims to increase the helicobacter pylori treatment rate among hospitalized patients as the current rate at Emory University Hospital Midtown is suboptimal.

“I consider this a defining event in my career. I think it will provide a great platform to pursue my research interests,” he says.

Annie Massart, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine

Massart hopes to achieve several outcomes with her FAME Grant project “Back to the beside: Improving faculty clinical and teaching skills through bedside peer teaching of the physical exam: A pilot study.” The basic design of the project will include creating small groups who will participate in both peer teaching of the physical exam and peer evaluation. In addition, Massart aims to continue building up peer education as a tool for faculty development.

“I believe this grant will serve as a next step for me as I work to understand the medical education and faculty development needs of academic hospitalists while creating paths for them to address those needs,” she says. “While this initial work will allow me to collaborate with my colleagues at Emory University Hospital, I hope to eventually serve the rest of the department and academic hospitalists across many institutions.”
