The 16th Annual IM Resident Research Day celebrates resident accomplishments and Emory’s collaborative research environment

For more than a decade, the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has successfully hosted the annual IM Resident Research Day to showcase residents’ research achievements and celebrate the collaboration between residents and dedicated faculty. This year’s event took place Tuesday, April 30 and featured resident oral abstract awardees at Grand Rounds, an afternoon poster session, and a celebratory resident happy hour.

The Resident Research Day Grand Rounds started with a keynote speech, “I’m Not Going to Be the Next Peter Libby: Finding Your Own Way in Academic Medicine,” from Alanna Morris, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology. Morris shared her personal journey of becoming an Emory faculty member, discovering her career path in academic medicine, finding mentors, and achieving success in research. The theme of Morris’ speech centered around “keep working hard, and hard work will pay off.”

Following her speech, this year’s oral abstract winners presented their research projects. Hima Veeramachaneni, MD, second-year resident, presented “Differences in Inpatient and Outpatient HCV Prevalence and Linkage to Care Rates in a Safety Net Hospital Hepatitis C Screening Program.” Tiffany Dong, MD, second-year resident, shared her research findings on project “Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is Associated with a Higher Mortality Rate in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease.” Lastly, second-year resident Shannon Murray, MD, delivered her presentation “MicroRNA-144 Mediates Alveolar Macrophage Dysfunction in HIV-1 Transgenic Rats.”
