The Emory University Department of Medicine is seeking candidates for the Vice Chair of VA Academic Affairs position. The Vice Chair will provide vision and leadership for research, scholarship, and education among Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and trainees based at the Atlanta VA Health Care System (VA). This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Medicine and work closely with the Chair, the VA Chief of Staff, the VA Service Line Chiefs (Specialty Medicine Service Line, Primary Care, Geriatrics Rehabilitation and Extended Care, Research, Education, and others), the Emory Associate Dean for VA Affairs, DOM Division Directors, other DOM leaders at the VA, and DOM Administration. He/she will work with other academic affiliates of the VA. The successful candidate will have experience and understanding in the VA system, demonstrate organizational awareness and agility, provide leadership, exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve operational goals.
Responsibilities:
- Provide vision and leadership for the DOM faculty based at the VA and research and teaching activities at all Atlanta VA sites. These initiatives should align with DOM and SOM goals and strategies.
- Work closely with the Associate Dean for VA Affairs, VA Chief of Staff, Associate Chief of Staff for Education, Associate Chief of Staff for Research, and VA Chief of the Specialty Medicine Service Line (and other Service Lines where faculty are aligned) to leverage and synergize VA and departmental resources and provide effective strategies for recruitment of research faculty, development of faculty research careers, building successful research programs, and enhancing the learning experience for DOM trainees at the VA through innovative curricula and unique training opportunities.
- Facilitate the engagement of DOM faculty into VA-funded research, educational, operational, and quality centers and programs.
- Lead the DOM VA Council and ensure that initiatives/recommendations of the council are prioritized and operationalized.
- Develop and monitor metrics applicable to the department’s research and teaching performance at the VA. This includes periodically assessing, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the productivity and success of faculty, research and education programs. This individual will present periodic progress reports to departmental leadership and the DOM VA Council.
- Serve as a results-oriented catalyst for change throughout the Department and the VA, inspiring colleagues to achieve new levels of expertise, confidence, and productivity.
- Provide key interface with leadership from Morehouse School of Medicine regarding GME programs and other academic activities.
- Facilitate recognition of DOM VA part-time and full-time faculty and their accomplishments throughout the DOM, SOM, and Emory University.
- May represent the Department in regional or national meetings involving the VA.
- Other special VA related projects to be determined in consultation with the Chair.
The faculty member serving as Vice Chair of VA Academic Affairs will be in an Emory-compensated position and will be expected to dedicate 20% of his/her time and effort to the role.
