Highlighted Researcher: Roy Sutliff

What is your professional background?
I completed a BS in Biochemistry at Temple University, and my PhD is in Pharmacology from the Medical College of PA. I then went on to a postdoctoral fellowship with Drs. Rick Paul and Litsa Kranias at the University of Cincinnati where I learned a lot about characterizing the physiology of gene-altered mouse models. I moved to Emory and worked with Dr. Bill Lewis in Pathology before joining the Pulmonary Division of the Department of Medicine. I also am fortunate to have an appointment with the Laney Graduate School where I work on the development of International Programs.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
My lab is based at the Atlanta VA in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep. I have lots of mentors, but Drs. Mike Hart, David Guidot and Kathy Griendling are the ones that stand out the most.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Being at Emory has enabled me to take on numerous diverse projects. Research examines endothelial cell and vascular smooth muscle cell interactions and their role in pathophysiological conditions. Areas studied include: 1) pulmonary vascular disease and atherosclerosis in HIV; 2) PPARg and its subsequent effects on NADPH oxidases regulation of pulmonary hypertension; 3) the effects of blood storage on vascular function; 4) Mechanisms of sickle cell disease associated pulmonary hypertension 5) vascular consequences of Alzheimer’s disease.

What do you like most about Emory?
My career has benefited greatly from the exceptional collaborative environment at Emory. I also really enjoy working with the outstanding undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows that Emory attracts.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I like movies and shows that have a twist that I did not see coming such as, Sherlock or Usual Suspects.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
My wife and I are on the Board of the Gwinnett Adoptive and Foster Parent Association which we believe meets a vital need in the community. We also really enjoy weekend excursions with friends and family.
