What is your professional background?
I am an associate professor of medicine at Emory and a physician-scientist. I received my bachelor’s and MD degrees from the University of North Carolina and then came to Emory for residency. I completed an infectious disease fellowship at Emory and received a Master’s of Science in Clinical Research. My clinical time is spent at the Grady Infectious Diseases Program taking care of patients living with HIV and I also attend on service at Grady Memorial Hospital.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Infectious Diseases and my lead mentor is Dr. Igho Ofotokun. I have been lucky to receive research mentorship from many others including Drs. Anandi Sheth, Tom Ziegler, Dean Jones, and Ed Acosta from UAB.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research focuses on antiretroviral exposure and pharmacology in the context of HIV reservoirs, toxicity/side effects and comorbidities with a special interest in sex differences. I am particularly interested in effects of HIV medications with regard to weight gain, obesity, and metabolic complications, particularly as women appear to be at higher risk than men. Despite this, women continue to be underrepresented in HIV clinical research. Understanding the interplay of sex-specific HIV pathogenesis and effects of chronic medications currently used to treat HIV is critical to minimize morbidity/mortality associated with end-organ disease.
What do you like most about Emory?
Emory prioritizes support of early career investigators, and friendly collaborations across divisions and departments are the “norm.” But my favorite part of being at Emory is being able to work and interact with people in my division; they are like family.
What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I love any show that has to do with espionage so one of my favorites was “The Americans.” I also adore the “Great British Baking Show” because I learn a lot and everything looks so delicious!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy running, trying new recipes, and gardening. My husband and I love to explore the area with our two young daughters.
What is a fun fact about you?
My family is originally from France and we moved to the US when my father was recruited to be the winemaster at the Biltmore Winery in Asheville, NC. I grew up on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate, so I had a very unique (and beautiful) childhood!
