Researcher Spotlight: Camille Vaughan
Camille Vaughan
Division Director – Geriatrics & Gerontology
2022 DOM Research Day – Best Oral Presentation (Quality/Health Services Research)

What is your professional background?
I am a geriatrician and completed my Master of Science in Clinical Research at Emory (through CTSA support) and a post-doctoral fellowship in aging research at the Atlanta VA through the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I serve as Division Director for Geriatrics & Gerontology and count many individuals as mentors. Ted Johnson is a long-time mentor. He spent many years redlining paper drafts and providing valuable career advice.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Broadly, my research focuses on improving care for older adults who are living with common geriatric conditions such as incontinence, nocturia, falls, and polypharmacy.  Recent projects involve leading a multi-site clinical trial within the VA to compare behavioral therapy and drug therapy for overactive bladder symptoms in persons with Parkinson’s disease. I recently completed an implementation trial to compare strategies for delivering audit and feedback to enhance prescribing safety toward older adults being discharged from the emergency department. I serve as co-lead for an AHRQ-funded implementation study to understand facilitators and barriers to delivery of non-surgical treatment for urinary incontinence among women in primary care. These team-science projects are aimed at informing best practices in the delivery of health care for older adults and would not be possible without partners at Emory, VA, Grady, and beyond.

What do you like most about Emory?
Collaborative culture, fantastic colleagues, and having the health sciences campus co-located with the other professional schools and the undergraduate college, which facilitates cross-disciplinary opportunities.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
When Harry Met Sally

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Read, travel, cheer for my kids’ soccer and cross-country events, serve as #17 at Atlanta United games.

What is a fun fact about you?
I love roller coasters, especially wooden coasters. Lightning Rod at Dollywood is a current favorite.
