What is your professional background?
I attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and received both my B.S. in Radiation Therapy and MPH in Health Behavior. Prior to my current position at Emory, I worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for 10 years for the Photobody Study and the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. I have worked in various sectors, but the majority of my positions have been in social, behavioral, and community-based research since my junior year in college. These past experiences and my passion for health disparities within minority and underserved populations have led me to be a part of the third cohort of the Doctor of Public Health Program, Social Epidemiology Concentration at Mercer University, which I began this past January.

Which division do you work in, and who is your mentor or PI?
I work as a Clinical Research Coordinator III with Molly Perkins, PhD, in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Our study, the INSPIRE Study, aims to learn ways to better support families and others caring for residents with advanced dementia in assisted living communities in Georgia. It is so important because the number of people over 65 years old with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related conditions is projected to increase exponentially and we need adequate resources to support them and those persons around them in caregiving roles. Through our study findings, we hope to provide insight to those working in the dementia care spaces to improve the quality of life for family caregivers and those with dementia.

What do you like most about Emory?
I love that Emory has cultivated a space with a supportive work community, which allows you to flourish both professionally and personally. In the past 18 months of being here and being new to Georgia, I have found connection, encouragement, and drive to be my best self through my INSPIRE Study team and my involvement with the Emory Black Employees Network (EBEN).

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
“The Wiz” and “The Wizard of Oz.” They are the same timeless story told in different ways, but I love them both the same.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Working and going to school full-time does not allow for spare time. However, right now, I most enjoy doing any activity outside and away from electronics.

What is a fun fact about you?
Whether it is crafting, baking, or assisting with Man Behind da Curtain Entertainment on events, my happy space is one where I can be creative!
