DOM Staff Spotlight: Hannah Huston

DOM Staff Spotlight of Hannah Huston, Associate Director, Programs Division of Infectious Diseases at the Hope Clinic of the Emory Vaccine Center

Our next DOM Staff Spotlight is Hannah Huston, Associate Director, Programs for The Hope Clinic of the Emory Vaccine Center. Learn more about our colleague below!

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I was born in Philadelphia but we moved to Chicago when I was eight and I’m a very proud Chicagoan.  I moved to Champaign, Illinois to finish undergrad at the University of Illinois and then to Albany, Georgia (long story) for a few years until settling in Atlanta in 2011.

What is your professional background?
I worked with kids for a decade through undergrad and grad school while getting my Master’s in Public Administration. Following grad school I was hired as a Post Award I in the DOM RAS. After a year and a half there, I transitioned to The Hope Clinic in 2016.

What is your role at Emory?
I’m the Associate Director of Programs at The Hope Clinic, which is the clinical arm of the Emory Vaccine Center. I manage the grant portfolios of several of our faculty and am the Finance Director for the Emory Clinical Trials Unit (Co-PIs: Igho Ofotokun, MD and Colleen Kelley, MD), a NIAID-funded award with a mission to advance HIV/AIDS research on prevention, vaccines, treatment, and cure and improve community knowledge about the disease. Under that award, we have two Atlanta-area clinical research sites and two international sites that I get to travel to and work closely with, one in Mexico City and another in metro Manila.

How long have you worked in the Department of Medicine?
Nine and a half years.

What are you currently working on? Any upcoming projects?
We’ve got several really exciting studies going on and coming up.  In July, we were the first to enroll in the NIH-sponsored nasal CoVID-19 vaccine trial. We’re also gearing up to start HPTN (HIV Prevention Trials Network) 106, a Phase 2 study to establish the safety and acceptability of a tenofovir rectal microbicide douche for on-demand PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
I love to travel, watch sports (mostly tennis (Vamos Rafa!) and football), bake, knit, read romance novels, and try new restaurants and breweries with friends and family. Lately, my husband and I have been on a mission to try at least one new-to-us Buford Highway restaurant a month.
