Emory well represented at IDWeek 2024

Earlier this month, from October 16–19, IDWeek 2024, the joint annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, was held in Los Angeles, California. Over 10,000 ID health professionals from various institutions and backgrounds around the world came together to collaborate, connect, and learn from each other’s patient care, research, and public health expertise. The Department of Medicine was well represented at ID week with a large number of residents, fellows, and faculty members not only in attendance but also serving as presenters and moderators.

  • Colleen Kelley, MD, served as the Program Chair for HIVMA and presented updated information on PURPOSE 1 and 2, two important clinical trials using Lenacapavir for PrEP
  • Wendy Armstrong, MD, Interim Director of the Division of Infectious Disease and the incoming vice president of IDSA moderated a panel at the Women in ID Breakfast titled “SHE for SHE”: A Masterclass in Supporting Other Women in ID
  • Varun Phadke, MD, presented on teaching clinical reasoning.
  • Jonathan Colasanti, MD, presented on real-world experience with long-acting injectable therapy for HIV
  • Our Department Chair Carlos del Rio, MD, participated in the Opening Plenary titled Navigating the Next Pandemic: Policy and Practice Integration
  • Yasha Joseph, Emory College Class of 2025 and INSPIRE (Infectious Diseases Summer Program Integrating Research at Emory) Student, presented “Summer Fever: Heating Up Diversity in Infectious Diseases at the Undergraduate Level: Being INSPIREd: My ID Summer Program Experience” session, which was organized and moderated by Zanthia Wiley, MD.
  • Laila Woc-Colburn, MD, served as a panelist for the “Challenging Cases in Infectious Diseases”
  • Zanthia Wiley, MD, served as a panelist at the IDWeek Annual Dr. George W. Counts Interest Group Dinner, a group of Black/African American Infectious Diseases physicians, scientists, and advocates who are committed to advancing health and systemic equity in medicine and the field of ID.

In total, Emory was represented by 72 presentations given by 50 speakers and 71 posters from 93 poster presenters. To see the full list, visit the 2024 ID week page HERE. The DOM’s group of attendees also enjoyed a lovely Emory Fellow’s dinner and reception at a local LA restaurant. For a more detailed coverage of IDWeek 2024, you can visit the NEJM Group’s daily recaps of the week’s most important presentations guided by Carlos del Rio, MD, and Rajesh Gandhi, MD, of Harvard Medical School.
