I am a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Renal Medicine. I have experience in both translational clinical research and basic science research. In addition to my research background, I am also a certified physician assistant with 15 years of experience working in several specialties. Being both a clinician and a scientist is amazing, and I look forward to prospering in both professions.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I have been a research postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Renal Medicine since late 2018. My initial postdoctoral mentor was Dr. Robert S. Hoover, who has since become the section chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at Tulane University School of Medicine. I am currently doing my second postdoctoral fellowship with my mentor, Dr. Jeanie Park.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My current research goal is to determine the role sympathetic nervous system (SNS) reactivity and dysregulation in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and hypertension (HTN) in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Furthermore, this research will demonstrate the benefits of using non-pharmacological methodologies such as transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation and mindfulness meditation in the treatment and/or prevention of comorbidities commonly associated with PTSD. This research is important because it can provide insight into the benefits of using non-pharmacological methodologies in the treatment of hypertension, especially in individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD.
