Jennifer Spicer, MD, MPH, named Associate Program Director for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program

We are pleased to announce that Jennifer Spicer, MD, MPH, has been named an Associate Program Director for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Spicer will be taking over the position from Reena Hemrajani, MD, who served in this role before becoming Program Director in October 2022.

Dr. Spicer completed her internal medicine residency, chief medical resident year, and infectious disease fellowship at Emory. She joined the Emory School of Medicine faculty in 2019 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. As a faculty member, Dr. Spicer continued to invest deeply in medical education, leading the residency program’s resident-as-teacher curriculum before serving as the Director of the Residency Distinction in Medical Education. In these roles, she has created and implemented a curriculum to develop residents as clinician-educators. Additionally, she has revamped the residency’s core curriculum in her position as Subspecialty Education Coordinator.

Dr. Spicer has a well-established national presence in medical education, and she is currently completing the coursework for a Masters of Health Professions Education. She is particularly interested in integrating the science of learning and evidence-based instructional techniques into curricula to maximize learning outcomes. She regularly delivers national workshops and invited lectures in these areas and holds medical education leadership roles in the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

Dr. Spicer will join the residency program’s leadership team along with six other Associate Program Directors led by Residency Program Director Reena Hemrajani, MD, effective March 1, 2023. Together, the residency leadership team helps guide the administrative, clinical, and educational oversight of the residency program. Dr. Spicer looks forward to using her passion for medical education to contribute to the mission of the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program.
