This year, to honor Black History Month we will be celebrating Black history right here at Emory Department of Medicine. Follow along with RYSE as we honor and celebrate those who have contributed to Emory DOM and provide some snapshots of Black History here at the DOM. You can find weekly highlights and fun facts in the DOM newsletter as well as on our socials.

This week’s Black History Month spotlight is Jada Bussey-Jones, MD, FACP. Read more below!

Dr. Bussey-Jones currently serves as the chief of general internal medicine, associate dean for professional development at Grady, and last year made Emory DOM history after receiving the Carter Smith, Sr. Chair in Medicine award. With only about 2% of faculty nationwide identifying as Black women, and even fewer holding endowed chair positions, Dr. Bussey-Jones’ appointment is a testament to her resilience and commitment to excellence; and also paves the way for those who come after her.

Her focus as a physician and an educator has been on improving the health of minority populations through understanding and addressing health care disparities and social determinants of health. She served as the inaugural vice chair of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the DOM and founded the Social Medicine Work Group in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

She continues to support the pathway of diverse health professionals through various innovative programs including the Under-Represented in Medicine (URiM) Faculty Development Program; the general internal medicine Faculty Review Committee that has resulted in high numbers of promotions for women and faculty of color; and a new advocacy and health equity course for Emory School of Medicine. She is also very active on several community boards, and regional and national organizations. Dr. Bussey-Jones has been recognized with a number of awards for her impactful work and role in the community of medicine, including the University-wide 2021 Exemplary Teacher Award, awarded to her for supporting the success of others.
