Currently, Dr. Bonsall serves as the Chief of Hospital Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital, the largest division within the Department of Medicine at Grady. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University. Dr. Bonsall completed her undergraduate training at Emory University, and her medical and graduate training at Emory University School of Medicine. She was hired as a hospitalist at Emory University Hospital Midtown in 2009, before transferring to Grady Memorial Hospital in 2017 to establish a hospital medicine group.
Dr. Bonsall received the Top Hospitalist Award from the American College of Physicians in 2019. Dr. Bonsall also received several teaching awards, including the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2014 and the 2020 Evangeline Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Award. For her work at Grady, she was awarded the first Emory University School of Medicine Distinguished Service Award in 2018.
During her current role as Grady’s Chief of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Bonsall’s leadership style, characterized by tenacity and compassion, has not only facilitated the growth of her service but has also fostered a culture of engagement and satisfaction among her faculty and staff. She introduced innovative solutions such as an inpatient procedure team, an Orthopedics co-management service, the deployment of hospitalists in the Emergency Department to oversee bed management, and the staffing of the inpatient observation unit. Her ability to maintain a high level of service quality, amidst challenges such as building flooding, the COVID-19 pandemic, and while the hospital landscape evolved rapidly around her, speaks volumes of her capabilities as a leader.
Dr. Bonsall’s clinical interests are in the management of pneumonia as well as care transitions. Dr. Bonsall also has a strong interest in medical education – from medical students to faculty. She was the Hospital Medicine Associate Division Director for Faculty Development from 2014 to 2019 and sat on the Department of Medicine’s Promotions and Tenure Committee from 2018 to 2020. In the School of Medicine, she was a Society Advisor from 2017 to 2024 and is currently the co-director of the MD/PhD program. She has worked closely with the Society of Hospital Medicine through chairing the Academic Committee from 2016 to 2019, co-directing the 2015, 2016, and 2017 Academic Summits and the Southern Hospital Medicine Conference from 2014 to 2018. She is the co-creator and co-director of Academic Hospitalist Academy Level 2 (renamed Academic Hospitalist Academy: Advancing your Career), which had its inaugural session in 2019. She completed a Masters in Health Professions Education in the Fall of 2022.
