On July 19 and 20, Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and the Department of Medicine’s Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology held the 7th Annual Southeast Review and Update on Medical Care of Older Adults. This dynamic one-and-a-half-day conference brought together a vibrant and diverse group of healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians, internal medicine and geriatric specialists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and hospice and palliative medicine experts, and the farthest participant traveling from Puerto Rico!

This year’s conference covered a broad spectrum of vital topics to address the multifaceted challenges faced by today’s elderly patients. Sessions ranged from discussions on ocular health to bladder care, along with crucial updates on vaccination guidelines and the highs and lows of blood pressure. The conference also delved into the critical issue of potentially inappropriate medications, ensuring that our community stays at the forefront of geriatric care. Dr. Nader Massarweh, Chief of Surgery at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, delivered the keynote address on “Surgical Care of the Older Patient.” His insights and expertise set a high bar for the conference, providing invaluable knowledge to all attendees.

“We were particularly proud of the significant involvement of Emory’s Department of Medicine, especially the Division of Geriatric Medicine. Our esteemed faculty and dedicated trainees not only attended but also actively contributed as presenters, sharing their expertise and research with peers from across the region. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who attended, presented, and served at this year’s meeting.”  —Fariha Sultan, MD (Geriatrics & Gerontology)

Together, this group continues to advance the quality of care for older adults, ensuring they receive the best possible medical attention. Congratulations on a successful conference, and we look forward to another enriching and inspiring conference next year.
