The 17th Annual Department of Medicine David S. Stephens Research Day celebrates another year of groundbreaking research!

The Emory Department of Medicine’s 17th Annual Research Day, which was recently renamed the Annual Department of Medicine David S. Stephens Research Day to acknowledge the service of our beloved immediate past chair of the Department, David Stephens, MD, was held yesterday. The event, held in person at the Emory Student Center, welcomed approximately 400 researchers, faculty, staff, and trainees to celebrate the groundbreaking research across all ten of the department’s divisions.

The Department of Medicine received a record breaking number of abstracts — over 200 — this year, showcasing progress, lessons, and breakthroughs from research across basic, translational, and clinical domains.

The event provided an opportunity for attendees to learn from more than 180 poster presentations, twelve oral presentations, five featured research talks, a special update from the DOM’s Chair for Research, Vibha Lama, MD, and a keynote address from the new Dean of the Emory University School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of Emory Healthcare, Sandra Wong, MD, entitled, “A learning health system: Lessons from rural health.”

In addition, this year, DOM researcher David Weiss, PhD (Infectious Diseases), presented the Lifetime Achievement in Research lecture as the fifth and final featured researcher of the day. His presentation entitled “Heteroresistance: from the clinic to the bench and back” reviews his research that was recently featured in a Nature Medicine article, Antifungal heteroresistance causes prophylaxis failure and facilitates breakthrough Candida parapsilosis infections, as well as in the Emory News Center article, “Emory researchers help discover source of deadly fungal infections in bone marrow transplant patients.”

We appreciate the Research and Faculty Development team’s hard work planning this wonderful event. Thank you once more to all our speakers, presenters, and attendees for your time and input, and congratulations again to the recipients of the 2024 awards!

Congratulations to this year’s Research Day award winners!
