What is your professional background?
I received my BS with honors in Microbiology and Biochemistry from St. Xavier’s College, and a MS in Biochemistry from The Institute of Science, University of Mumbai, India. In 2015, I relocated to the United States, and earned my PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center under the mentorship of Drs. Luke Szweda and Michael Kinter. My journey then continued to Atlanta, for a postdoctoral position, where I am currently working with some great minds and learning a great deal in the world of metabolomics.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine with great mentors, Drs. Dean P. Jones and Young Mi-Go Kang.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research focuses on understanding mitochondrial-cell signaling networks in response to environmental toxicity pertaining to metals. Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient at low dose, but has been associated with neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease at high doses. My research involves establishing a human neuronal cell model of manganese neurotoxicity and using integrated omics technology (metabolomics and transcriptomics) to decipher changes in mitochondrial-cell signaling networks ranging from physiological adaptability to toxicological effects. In brief, it is understanding the role of low to high dose Mn toxicity using systems biology approach and its implications in neurological diseases. I am also a part of multiple collaborative projects involving metabolomics, on campus and within the lab.
What do you like most about Emory?
I enjoy the collaborative environment that Emory has to offer. Teamwork is highly valued and individual growth is enhanced by great mentorship and various activities organized on campus. Besides, Emory has a beautiful campus.
What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I enjoy lighthearted humor. Big Bang Theory is my go to, for obvious reasons, but I also enjoy The Good Doctor, The Good Place, and Black-ish.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family. I also enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or just exploring the food in Atlanta. With the plethora of choices available, it is hard to resist. During the holidays, I enjoy traveling around the United States.
