What is your professional background?
I was trained in medicine, endocrinology, and lipidology. On the job, I learned epidemiology with summer coursework over my early years as a clinical investigator. My career has focused on cardiovascular population research and risk estimation.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am in the Division of Cardiology at the Emory School of Medicine. My mentors have included William Kannel (deceased) at the Framingham Heart Study, Brian Brewer when he was at NIH, and Scott Grundy at UT Southwestern, Dallas, TX.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
I investigate cardiometabolic risk factors and currently am most active in the VA with national databases and with the Million Veterans Program that focuses on genetics. This involves a lot of collaborations with investigators in Boston, Palo Alto, Philadelphia, and other locales.
What do you like most about Emory?
Collegiality and interest in learning are what I like most at Emory.
What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show?
Outside of medical topics, I especially like biographies of scientists and American presidents.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Classical guitar is my hobby. I am enthusiastic, but my talent is modest.
