What is your professional background?
I completed medical school at the Government Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India. After medical school, I became a research fellow at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. I, then, trained as an internal medicine resident at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. In order to further enhance my research skills, I completed two years of advanced cardiovascular imaging research focusing on pericardial and structural heart diseases at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. I simultaneously obtained a Masters in Clinical Research from Drexel University. I joined Emory in July 2017 as a cardiology fellow in the clinical investigator track.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am currently working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Emory Cardiovascular Imaging and Biomechanical Core lab (ECBC). My mentor is Dr. Habib Samady who is the Director of ECBC and Director of the Department of Interventional Cardiology at Emory.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
We recently demonstrated that an angiography derived hemodynamic index called Wall Shears Stress (WSS) may help identify which patients with stable coronary artery disease are at higher risk of having a heart attack in the future. This paper won the William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC). In the future, we plan to investigate if a non-invasive CT-derived WSS can also help identify patients who have a vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque and might benefit from coronary revascularization. These research advancements could result in a paradigm shift in how we manage patients with stable coronary artery disease.
What do you like most about Emory?
Emory has an amazing mentorship program that provides a solid foundation for personal and academic growth. There is also a great collaborative atmosphere between the various departments of Emory and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
What is your favorite book, movie, or television show?
I love reading Dan Brown Novels. My favorite movie is The Prestige, and my favorite tv show is Game of Thrones.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my wife, friends, and family, traveling, trying out new restaurants and Karaoke nights. I play for a local cricket team in the Georgia Cricket Conference League on my free weekends.
